Government: a person or group of people who make important decisions about how to run a country. Governments make laws to protect people, keep peace and provide services. Leaders Elections - many leaders are elected. This means that people vote for them. Mayor - a leader of a city or town. Councils - people who help the mayor make decisions When people vote they use ballots. Ballots are pieces of paper with names on them. Peru The main (national) government for Peru is in Lima. The president is the leader of the national government of Peru. The people of Peru elect their president. Maria lives in a community called Villa El Salvador. Villa El Salvador is now a safer place because the government put in street lights. When Maria was 2 years old, floods washed away many homes in Villa El Salvador. The government of Peru sent food, clothing and water to the homeless people of Villa El Salvador. Tunisia The leader of Tunisia is the president. The main government of Tunisia is in the city of Tunis. The president of Tunisia chooses ministers to help him do different jobs. Ahmed's uncle Habib lives near the city of Mahdia. Mahdia is famous for its tuna fish. The city council controls the tuna business. Ukraine The leader of Ukraine is the president. Sometimes people in a Ukrainian community organize a referendum. A referendum is when people vote either "yes" or "no" on an issue. A committee is a group of people who work together on a job or project. Irena's father is the manager of a department store that is owned by the workers of the store. India The leader of India is the prime minister. The prime minister is elected by the people of the country. The national government of India is located in the city of Delhi. The leader of Ravi's town is called a development officer. The development officer is responsible for taking care of more than 200 villages!
